CHRONICLES OF HARRIS BURDICK: 14 AMAZING AUTHORS....
I was so excited to open up THE CHRONICLES OF HARRIS BURDICK: FOURTEEN AMAZING AUTHORS TELL THE TALES... I mean, I had seen the original book and enjoyed imagining stories. I had read other books by the authors in this book and knew they were good writers. Before you get all fizzy, I will say, this is a good book. I just think when you say it is for 10 and up, I'd say more UP. I read the entire thing and thought of possible responses from young readers. I think it is more for teenagers or adults. But it is a good book. I gave it to our youngest son who is thirty-two. Yeah for good books!Marge Wood

Warped cover
Itβs a childhood favorite. Iβm disappointed that the cover of the book is warped so it doesnβt lie flat against the pages.

Disappointed...didn't live up to expectations
I have loved the original book for years. I have used it every year to teach upper elementary writing techniques. The students and I have loved the mystery and creativity. I would use this to teach hooks (story openings), as well as story development. It was also great to use as a story starter for the students to supply their own stories to the original pictures.I was so excited to hear of this new book, and even more excited when I heard the list of accomplished authors who would be contributing. Maybe I was expecting way too much, but overall, I was disappointed in the new stories. Don't get me wrong, the stories are well written, but in my opinion, they were just not that interesting or creative. For most, I just kept waiting on the climax, but ended up feeling disappointed more often than not.Again, good writing, but not great! I guess it's good as a companion piece, but I would suggest that people just stick with the original book and the fascinating world this book allows for the readers imagination. I guess this imagined world is much better than the reality provided by this book.

Fantastic!
My students love hearing alternate stories (they write their own based on the original pictures) written by many of their favorite authors. Great, short read alouds.

Ahhh ... should have left it to my own imagination!
Some good, some ordinary, few as good as the illustrations!Ok ... there were good ones ... ok, there were even lots of good ones ... They ranged from readable to enjoyable. There were creepy ones, sci-fi ones, sweet ones. But ultimately for me it was like putting a bird in a cage. Like putting a limit on your dreams. Like watching TV rather than read a book.I find the intro and pictures in The Mysteries of Harris Burdick so vivid that they enthral your imagination. I have used it often in the classroom and each time I would take it out something new, different, wild or whimsical would come to mind. The "Mysteries" tantalises where the "Chronicles" serves it on a plate. Is there a place for it? Yes ... i can see that it is a good way to introduce children to a range of genre. Give them an idea and let them better it.

Well that didn't turn out as expected
The fascination of the original book was filling your imagination with the possibilities as to the tales that would unfold with each illustration. A bunch of people who wrote stuff got together and wrote their interpretations of each story, and man...let me tell you, they're WAYYYYY off from my interpretations and visions as a child. There aren't enough decapitations, exploding nuns, face-eating jack-o lanterns, and Hitler impersonators to fancy my tickle. So if you're my age (79) and grew up with these illustrations, you'll be gravely disappointed that these stories lack these things.

I love the idea of a missing author in The Mysteries ...
I love the idea of a missing author in The Mysteries of Harris Burdick and I have used it as a teaching resource quite a few times. I was keen to buy this to see what the more established authors would do with it. I was a bit disappointed. This book is ok but not great. Some stories are better than others but none of them really stand out. When I use this as a resource, I will be picking carefully which ones I read to my class. There are some that I know they will just not enjoy which detracts from the excitement and mystery about where Harris Burdick could have gone.

Fabulous illustrations
Dead spooky really - I was completely fooled by the story of the publisher and the mysterious writer and thought it was a real story ! The illustrations are so quirky and detailed that the adults and children I shown were hooked and began imagining what the story was behind each one. This is such a valuable tool for encouraging children to think of the story behind the picture that , after explaining this to school, it was adopted to be the catalyst for our creative writing sessions.Imaginations went wild ............

I will use with Y6
This book takes the original Harris Burdick drawings and then adds stories written by modern authors. I will be using it with my Y6 class. I think they will love making up their own stories, using the images as a stimulus, and then hearing the stories by the authors.

Fantastic book
Bought this for hubby - graduate teacher as an aid to literacy projects/lesson plans (KS2).Absolutely love it!He thought it was great and I think the illustrations are superb - really thought provoking. Its interesting to see how other people's minds work too - when making up their stories to fit the pictures

Thought provoking and a little obscure.
This is a really great follow up to the original book with some very interesting stories contributed by several welll known authors. I will use it to exemplify how the original pictures can provike a narrative with my Year 6 children.
