Q: What can be used to protect this after being cut, so that edges and holes do not disintegrate or expand?

I personally would brush it with Modge Podge , this will seal it and be transparent also a bit if a skin to add strength

Q: What is the foam’s chemistry? eva, xps or something else? closed or open cell?

I’m not sure of the chemical make up but it’s hard knitted foam
